Artist statement
Jeongin Choi
I paint imaginary landscapes with oil paints.
The landscape I paint could be the imagined place, or it could be the vague memory of the place from my childhood, it could be about the dreams I dreamt, it could be the visualization of lyrical poems I read and classical music I listen to. I arrange elements: trees, birds, moon, sky, people. not just as forms, but as devices that can carry my emotions: hope, love, nostalgia, melancholy, and beyond.
Art always carries its own rhythm of language, a language I understand as consolation for those weary of this world.
Nature, I believe, has a similar rhythm of language but more honest and more understated. I try to capture that unheard consolation of nature through the imaginary world I create on my canvas.
I begin my work by visualizing the composition of my emotions, imaginations, and memories. And I lead that composition to a world where everything loses its name. Here, trees are not merely trees, and the sky is not sky; everything exists as pure forms, no more than simple shapes, lines, and color blocks.
Then, I layer different colors and irregular textures over those forms. Each layer adds abstract depth to them, which holds a range of my states: from expressive and compulsive to restrained and contemplative. After revisiting and rearranging many times, When I finally see all the colors, textures, shapes, space, and emotion come together in a harmony that speaks the consolative language of nature. I finish the work.
